Back to Basics
Welcome to a new guild year! For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been an avid crafter my whole life. I started with crochet and embroidery when I was about 9, and picked up tatting and knitting in my early 20’s. I just added spinning to my repertoire about two years ago and was so excited to find this guild! I still feel like a beginner spinner, and I’ve noticed a lot of new spinners joining our group in the last year, so I wanted to focus my term as president on The Basics; helping all of us learn and grow, but also give everyone ideas on what to do with all that yarn! Our basic structure for the year will be alternating between spinning techniques and something spinning adjacent—knitting, crochet, dyeing, weaving, etc.
Fiber of the month
Also, we’re going have a Fiber of the Month for members! This year I’m going to focus on the Livestock Conservancy's Shave ‘Em 2 Save ‘Em program. This program was developed to help preserve endangered breeds, which you can learn more about here: https://livestockconservancy.org. For our FotM, everyone will get 1oz of fiber—either raw or roving—to spin and bring back each month to receive their next breed sample. It’s $20 to start, and $10 to buy back in if you don’t bring back your spun fiber to the next meeting. I’m mostly going to focus on the more critical breeds as those can be the hardest to source and will include information about where you can purchase more. If you are interested in signing up, please let me know and get your payment in ASAP so I can be sure to order enough fiber before our next meeting.
The membership form is below and a link for a PDF copy in above. Complete the form and bring your payment to the next meeting or send to Kira Masnica, 1042 E Fort Union Blvd #138, Midvale, UT 84047
